How to choose a Muslim name
Muslims are encouraged to give their children names with good meanings. Many families choose the name of a prophet (Ibrahim, Yusuf, Musa) or of a righteous woman (Maryam, Khadija, Fatima). Others choose a name expressing servitude to Allah, such as Abdullah or Abdulrahman, or an Arabic word with a beautiful meaning, like Noor (light), Sakina (tranquillity) or Yusra (ease).
Persian and Turkish names with good meanings, such as Shirin (sweet) or Elif, are also widely used across the Muslim world. Whatever you choose, say the name aloud with your surname, check how it is spelled in Arabic script, and make sure you are happy with its meaning.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a name Islamic?
There is no single official list of Islamic names. Muslims are encouraged to choose names with good meanings. Popular choices include the names of prophets and righteous people, names that express servitude to Allah such as Abdullah and Abdulrahman (described as among the names most beloved to Allah, in Sahih Muslim), and Arabic words with beautiful meanings. Names in Persian, Turkish and other languages with good meanings are also widely used.
What does 'Quranic' mean in this generator?
A name is marked Quranic when the name itself, or the Arabic word it comes from, appears in the Quran. 96 of the names here are marked that way. Plenty of excellent names, including many names of the Prophet's companions, do not appear in the Quran.
Are the meanings accurate?
Each name shows its commonly accepted meaning. Some names have more than one interpretation, and where a literal meaning is disputed we describe who the name honours instead. For religious guidance about a particular name, consult a knowledgeable scholar.
