Frequently asked questions

What size should a passport size photo be?

35 × 45 mm, the passport-photo size used by the UK, the Schengen countries and many others, and common on ID cards and forms. 413 × 531 pixels (35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI), ready to print or upload. Head (chin to crown) about 70–80% of the photo height, facing the camera. Always confirm with the passport or visa office you're applying to before you apply.

Can it change the background colour?

No. It crops, resizes and compresses but doesn't edit the background. Take the photo against a plain wall of the right colour in good, even light. That's also what most authorities require, since edited photos can be rejected.

What if my photo or signature is below the minimum KB?

Some forms reject files that are too small as well as too large, and a plain image such as a signature can stay below the minimum even at full quality. When that happens, the tool adds invisible padding (a JPEG comment block) to bring the file up to the minimum. The picture itself is unchanged.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Cropping, resizing and compression all happen in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.

Is it free?

Yes. It's completely free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
