Gross (incl. VAT)1,160.00 KES

Adding 16% VAT (Kenya) to your net amount.

How to add 16% VAT

Multiply the net amount by 0.16 to get the VAT, then add it on. For example, 1,000.00 KES net + 160.00 KES VAT = 1,160.00 KES gross.

How to remove VAT from a price

Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.16. For example, 1,000.00 KES including VAT ÷ 1.16 = 862.07 KES net, so the VAT is 137.93 KES. Subtracting 16% of the gross instead would give 840.00 KES, which understates the net amount. It's the most common VAT mistake.

VAT (value-added tax) is a consumption tax charged at each stage of supply. Businesses add it to their sales and generally reclaim the VAT they pay on their own purchases, so the tax is ultimately borne by the final consumer.

The standard rate in Kenya is 16%, charged in KES. Reduced or zero rates may apply to some goods and services. Use the calculator's custom rate for those, and confirm current rates with the tax authority before you file.
